What Do I Need?
In addition to the services that we provide at Adams Funeral Home, there are several things that you will be required to provide at the time of the death of your loved one. To help in your time of need, we have provided a simple checklist that includes this information to help assist you with preparations. There are several contacts that you will need to make at the time of death. We encourage you not to try and do everything yourself, but contact a friend or family member to help with the following contacts:
- Doctor
- Coroner
- Funeral Home -- We will coordinate arrangements for the cemetery or memorial park, prepare the Social Security form and see that the number is retired, will assist you in determining the number of death certificates you will need, will order the certificates for you and provide the many other services that are listed in this section of our website.
- Clergy
- Relatives and friends
- Pallbearers
- Insurance Agents
- Banks
- Unions and Fraternal Organizations
- Organists
There are several things you will need to select and decide upon prior to the funeral service:
- Casket
- Cemetery property
- Clothing
- Vault or outer container
- Flowers
- Music
- Thank you announcements
- Time and place for funeral
- Time and place for visitation
- Transportation
- Type of funeral service
You will need to be ready to provide the following information and needed documents:
- Age
- Birth date
- Birthplace
- Cause of Death
- Education - College Degrees
- Father’s name
- Mother’s name
- Marital status
- Memberships held
- Military Service
- Obituary information (the funeral home will normally write the article and submit to newspaper)
- Occupation
- Social Security Number
- Time and place of services
- List of survivors in immediate family
- Veteran’s Discharge or Claim Number
In addition, you will want to:
- Make arrangements for out-of-town visitors
- Make a list of all people who must be notified
- Choose a charity for memorial contributions
- Decide appropriate memorial to which gifts may be made
- Locate the will and notify lawyer and executor
- Check carefully all life and casualty insurance and death benefits including social security, credit union, fraternal and military
- Check promptly on all debts and installment payments, including credit cards. Some carry insurance clauses that cancel balances upon death.
- If deceased was living alone, you should notify utilities and landlord and tell post office where to send mail.
